Bola de Berlin

Today is my blog's anniversary! In the summer of 2007 I started discovering the online crafty community and fell in love with reading blogs...so much that I created my (sometimes neglected) own. There has been a lot of changes in my life in these 7 years, naturally, and I love to see that documented on the blog. A few weeks ago, a dear friend of mine asked me why had I never written a post about the name of the blog...so I have decided to celebrate this special blog-anniversary day with a little piece on that and a recipe.

I must start saying that I love cakes and all sweet things. That's the main reason why I'm not in speaking terms with my weighting scales, but I think that life wouldn't be as fun without cake so I keep eating them! Anyway...my love affair with the Portuguese cakes called "Bolas de Berlim" started when I was child on holidays in Montegordo (a beach in my beloved home country of Portugal). The sea water was warm and I loved nothing else but swimming and playing in it…except when I heard a man walking down the beach, all dressed in white, singing “ooooooohhhhh bolinhas berliiiiiiiiim”! That was it; I was out of the water as quickly as I could and straight to my parents’ parasol asking “please, please, please” for one “Bola de Berlim”. The man carried a wicker basket and inside were these lovely golden cakes in the shape of a ball ("bola" in Portuguese)…he’d stop whenever people approached him wanting to buy these delicious cakes and you would see him surrounded by kids and grown ups alike in no time.

Nothing tastes like it to this day…maybe it’s the taste of sweet memories that make it extra special for me. I named my blog after my favourite cakes because I wanted it to be as sweet as them. I know...but it's true :)
Bolas de Berlim – Recipe (found in an old family recipe book)
Ingredients:
* For the dough:
   – 0.5kg flour
   – 25g baker’s yeast
   – 75g sugar
   – 1 dl lukewarm water (to dissolve the yeast)
   – 1 egg
   – 3 egg yolks
   – flour (for sprinkling)
* For the Portuguese Pastry Cook Custard (filling):
   – 0.5l of milk
   – 1 lemon peel
   – 60g of flour
   – 150g of sugar
   – 6 egg yolks
First, dissolve the baker’s yeast in lukewarm water. then mix it with the flour, egg, egg yolks and sugar. Knead the mixture well, until it acquires the consistency of a bread dough, then sprinkle it with flour, place it in a container and cover with a cloth.
Leave it to ferment for about an hour in a warm place. Then knead it lightly and cut off 50-gram-pieces of dough. Shape these into small balls. Arrange the balls of dough on a narrow, spread out cloth sprinkled with flour, and leave them to ferment until they double in size. Pick them up carefully one at the time and fry them in moderately hot cooking oil. then drain and sprinkle them or coat them in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon in the proportion of five parts of sugar to one part of cinnamon. Open them up in the middle with scissors and add the filling.
For the Portuguese Pastry Cook Custard: mix the sugar with the flour, add the egg yolks and then add the milk little by little, stirring continuously. Heat this up with bubbles, stirring continuously especially near the side of the pan. remove from the heat and pour into a cold container.

Bye bye 2012

We said goodbye to 2012 in Portugal...we certainly had the last fun days of the year there! We visited, talked, had lunch/dinner and played with loved ones, loved ones that are usually far away and that we miss a lot...it was great :)

In the middle of it all there was Christmas...the first time a special little boy was REALLY excited about Santa Claus visiting and leaving him presents :) he had sooooo much fun!! It was also the first Christmas for a special little girl who was spoiled with cute little presents (that her brother helped her opening) and loved to admire the Christmas trees' lights. We had so much fun that James is already counting down...11 months to go :)

Com um dia assim...With a day like this...

The days have been like this outside...grey and "sad" (we all need a Dolores Cowl like the one in the photo).

But inside the house it's a happy day...we like to munch, to play and even to clean the house with our little hoovers ;)

I need more time...

I just wanted to show you what I've been doing with my (little) free time...I try to keep in contact with the world outside our house but, when I'm inside it there's little time to do anything (besides taking care of James). I'm trying to adapt to this new situation (that's why my knitting bag is always on the couch, with one or two projects on the go) but things here are very slow, literally! A small project like this Cowl above took me nearly a month to finish!?! Anyway...despite my deadlines being stretched so many times, this little project is on time, ready to warm a dear neck very very soon :) The yarn I used was Malabrigo Chunky (bought in the fabulous shop Imagiknit in San Francisco when we went there at the end of 2008), wonderful to work with...and the colours? They're a dream!
This was not the first time that I knited a Cowl with this yarn (I made a beautiful one last summer in grey tones to give as a present as well), but I didn't get the chance to take pictures of it...

...that's it...I need more time! 24 hours are not enough in my day...they're not enough to knit, to take fotos, to read, to write, anyway...it has to be little by little :) The photo above was the only picture I took to the (little) pieces I knitted to give as present last Christmas :)

Ponha-a numa taça e adicione o açúcar e a baunilha.
  4. Bata os ovos numa taça pequena e adicione-os à taça grande pouco a pouco. Misture bem.
  6. Corte as nozes em pedacinhos. Adicione-as à mistura e misture tudo muito bem.
Eles ainda devem estar fofinhos no interior.

Yes...in the last few days squares have "dominated" my time, in a positive way :) I started sewing the little squares of a blanket I made for the baby from the book "Baby knits for beginners" from Debbie Bliss (it's almost, almost ready) and today I baked brownies with our niece Keara - it was fun and the brownies were delicious :) If only the sun would pay us a visit...

Here's the brownies recipe (it makes 16):

Ingredients
  • 175g margarine
  • 350g caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence or extract
  • 3 eggs
  • 125g plain flour
  • 1 level teaspoon of baking powder
  • 50g cocoa
  • 175g walnuts
Use a 22x30x2.5cm oblong tin and heat your oven to 180ºC, 350ºF, gas mark 4.

  1. Put your tin onto a piece of greaseproof paper or baking parchment. Draw around it and cut out the rectangle.
  2. Grease the tin with some margarine on a paper towel. Lay the paper in the tin and grease the top of it (I used a silicone "tin", so there's no need to grease it up or use paper). Then, turn on your oven.
  3. Put the margarine into a pan and melt it over a low heat. Pour into a mixing bowl, then add the sugar and vanilla.
  4. Break the eggs into a small bowl and beat them. Add them to the large bowl, a little at a time. Beat them in well.
  5. Sift the flour into the bowl and add the baking powder and the cocoa. Stir everything together so that it is mixed well.
  6. Put the walnuts onto a chopping board and cut them into small pieces. Add them to the mixture and stir it well again.
  7. Pour the mixture into the tin and smooth the top with the back of a spoon. Bake it for about 40 minutes.
  8. The brownies are ready when they have risen and a crust has formed on top. They should still be soft in the middle.
  9. Leave the brownies in the tin for five minutes, then cut them into 16 squares. Leave them on a wire rack to cool.

A walk in the Woods

Yesterday the weather was nice (= it wasn't raining and the sun showed up some times...) and Tom had a day off so we decided to go for a walk in the Oughaval Woodland that is 30 minutes away from Carlow. I loved the smells, the fresh air and the light exercise :) I think we're going to comeback...especially Tom, who's running several times a week with his friends - he was already imagining which path they would choose for their run in the woods :)

What I have been doing...

That's right...being at home is, sometimes, not too easy. At least for me it hasn't been too easy for me in the last 2 weeks...I'm always a bit tired, but trying to keep myself busy. This week, my favourite activities were knitting (baby bootees) & cooking (especially the apple & cinammon cake...if the weather is like winter, why not the flavours as well?) :)

I'm still here...

Yes, I'm still here :) I haven't been posting for lack of time, for the constant & irritating presence of that sun allergy that almost drove me insane (it's almost, almost gone) and now because of the time needed to adapt to the rest period imposed by my doctor! Yes...I've been having some "interesting" weeks! Well, I'm back now...rounder than ever :) Have a great weekend everybody!

Tidying up & going out

So, we actually had a sunny weekend here on the Emerald island. It's true...and when I wasn't working, visiting friends and dreaming with the beach I'm going to next weekend, there was time for some tidying up (we're re-organising some things in our house to welcome our baby in a few months) and wonderful desserts (in a red berries farm not too far from here)...how was your weekend?

News...at last!

Yes, it's true...the reason of my "desappearance" is this :) I have no energy or will to do anything crafty since the beginning of January; maybe it's because I've been working extra hard in the production of our first baby. Everything seems to be alright...and some thins are getting rounder and rounder (me, of course)!

What a great time of the year!...

Autumn is coming. Actually, I think it's already outside. And what do I do about it? I complain about the rain (a quality that every inhabitant of this island has, naturally), knit almost all the time (it's so exciting), put on the heating in the evening, shop on ETSY for lovely fabrics (to make cute little things with my - still new - sewing machine during the many rainy weekends expected for the following months), drink tea and make lists after lists (of things to do until Christmas) in my new adorable quilted List-Taker made by Jennifer. What a great time of the year!...

On this side of the world...

On this sie of the world...there's no big news; only a few meetings with friends that involve eating cakes, of course :) This time I decided to check one of my favourite cooking books, the "Popular Portuguese Confectionery" from Chef Silva and I ended up making the Cake "Delícia de Maçãs". It seemed to have been the right choice because the cake "disappeared" and I wasn't able to take any photos of it. I think this cake is complemented well by a nice cup of tea :) Ummm...

1 chávena e meia de açúcar (almoçadeira);
3 ovos;
1 chávena (chá) de óleo;
2 chávenas (chá) de farinha peneirada com 2 colheres (chá) de bicarbonato de soda;
1 colher (chá) de canela e 1/2 colher (chá) de sal fino;
1 chávena (chá) de passas sultanas;
0,4kg de maçãs;
1 chávena (chá) de nozes e amêndoas peladas e picadas;
1 colher (sopa) de raspa de limão;
manteiga (para untar);

I love the fact that the book has the recepies in Portuguese and in English because, this way, I can share it with more friends :) Here is the Cake "Delícia de Maçãs" (8 to 10 people):

1.5 breakfast cups sugar;
3 eggs;
1 teacup cooking oil;
2 teacups flour sifted together with 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda;
1 teaspoon cinnamon;
1/2 teaspoon fine salt;
1 teacup sultanas;
0.4kg of apples;
1 teacup peeled and chopped walnuts and almonds;
1 soupsoon lemon zest;
butter (for greasing);
flour (for sprinkling)

Grease a large cake tin with butter; line the bottom with greaseproof paper, then grease it again and sprinkle with flour. Peel the apples, remove the pith and seeds and cut them into small cubes. Mix the sugar with the eggs, then gradually and alternately add the cooking oil and the flour having also added previously the apples, sultanas (I didn't had these), walnuts and almonds and the lemon zest. Pour the mixture into the cake tin, place in the oven and bake for about 70 minutes at 150ºC. Check the baking then remove it from the oven, let it cool a little then carefully detach the cake from the baking tray.

Because is very cold (very very cold) I have been wearing a scarf that I finished two weeks ago - a design from the begginers class from the shop "This is Knit" - it's very soft :)

Carnaval

Paraíso, a Irlanda?!?

It's Carnaval in many parts of the world...but not here! Not that I miss this special day too much; I even prefer "Pancake Tuesday" that is celebrated in Ireland :-) Tomorrow is the day to eat pancakes and "cry" for more...and I don't even need to dress appropriately! Paradise, Ireland?!

Grey days

Ireland is great, it's just a pitty that it rains so much here..."ah well" (as people here say all the time :-)), it's green for a reason! It's just a bit annoying when you have 2 free days (=weekend) and it's so miserable outside.

So what can a girl do? Ummm...maybe some knitting while watching some portuguese tv (yes, I love to have some portuguese tv channels to watch now because it makes me feel a little bit closer to home...it might sound "sad" but I don't care :-)). The knitting was great - I've learned a new technique, finished a lovely scarf (I'll show you some pictures soon) and continued working on the little blanket for tricot du coeur - the "tv watching" was interesting (I like to get updated on what's going on...and there was alot of updating to do :-)) and the sleeping wasn't bad either! Sometimes I need a weekend like this...

What do you think about this "shake"? I love it :-) I was looking for a simple pattern for my first hat and found this one in the This is Knit shop last weekend...I couldn't resist!

And what about the needles, aren't they cute? They're called "Peace Fleece Needles, they're made of wood and are handpainted . They're very easy to use and simply beautiful...It was one more case of "love at first site" :-)
